My Twentysomething Life

I Do, Make, Read, Watch, Eat…

10 Reasons..

I have to admit, I’ve had trouble coming up with something to write about recently (and I’ve been too busy to really think about it), so I am referencing the “I’m Stuck” list tonight.  Here’s a fun one for you.

10 Reasons I Couldn’t Live Without Popcorn

(mmm, doesn’t that just make you hungry!)

1.  I eat it almost every night for a snack
2.  I feel totally safe eating it.  Who would put nuts in popcorn?
3.  It’s salty
4.  But it can be sweet
5.  It can taste like just about anything you put on it (my favorites include: cinnamon sugar, cheese, and birthday cake)
6.  It’s healthy?  Okay, healthier than cookies
7.  It’s crunchy
8.  It’s my favorite snack
9.  It’s quick to make, so it satisfies my hunger sooner
10. I do not know what else would taste so good with movies

In summation.  I could not live without popcorn because it is the perfect and my most favorite snack.
I could use some right now…

Where Have I Been?

You might be wondering where I have been.  I had been doing so well at blogging more frequently and then poof I was gone.  Well let me tell you where I was.  I was (well am) sick with a sinus infection.  It started last Thursday.  I didn’t go to work and instead went to the doctor.  She started me on an antibiotic and told me if I did not feel great on Monday to come back.  Well Friday started out pretty good, I went to work and everything, but in the afternoon I got really worn out and was feeling awful so I went home and laid on my couch and Amanda kept me company.

Saturday I took it easy for most of the day.  Adam and I ran a couple errands and then we went to dinner at our pastors house who is also a professor at Milligan.  There were more people there than we had expected but it was a nice evening.

Sunday morning I was feeling pretty good, we went to church and to the fellowship meal.  And then I started to set up for the shower that Lauren and I were throwing for our friend Sarah.  Since I forgot to take pictures you can check out Lauren’s pictures on her blog here.  Then in the evening Adam and I went on a date.  We went to McDonalds for dinner and then saw The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones.  I’ve been reading the books and was so excited about the movie and we both enjoyed it.

Once we got home is when I realized how exhausted I was and how sick I felt.  Sunday night was miserable.  I had a hard time sleeping, was running a fever, achy and all that.  I finally fell asleep and when I woke up felt even worse.  So I didn’t go to work and instead went back to the doctor.  While there they tested me for strep and mono and then said I still only had a sinus infection.  They switched my antibiotic and I went home and slept for a lot of the rest of the day.

Yesterday I was feeling a lot better and went to work and got to hang out with some wonderful friends last night.  We had so much fun.  I hope I keep feeling even better.  I hate being sick.  I’m also hoping this is the only time this year I get sick.  I’m crossing my fingers.

Welcome Back

It has been so busy around here.  I haven’t had time to blog.  I have been busy the last two weeks getting ready for registration and it’s here.  Yesterday and today are registration days which are very hectic for financial aid.  But I’m glad that the students are back.  So, welcome back students.

I also wanted to say to myself: “Welcome back to Pinterest!”  Since I was ahead of schedule this morning before work I took some time to welcome myself back to Pinterest.  Here are some of my favorite pins from my pinning this morning:

1I wish I had a princess apron 🙂
2I wish I had a cute bench to decorate.  Or a place to put a cute bench like this.

And this is for my father and my grandfather:  Enjoy!

I have sure missed Pinterest!

Move In Day

Today is move in day for new students at Milligan College.  And while I am not moving in today I did work in the Financial Aid Office this morning to answer any questions.  And I got to thinking about my past move in days.

move in 2008On move in day (2008) at Anderson, I did not know anyone.  I was so nervous.  I only barely knew my roommate, Lyndsay.  We had met once before moving in.  Since I didn’t know anyone I had a great experience meeting everyone and making new friends.  The first week of school we had dorm Olympics and theme nights.  It was a really fun and great way to get to know everyone.  I had a great freshman year at Anderson and made a lot of great friends.
move in 2009 This is a picture from move in day 2009 to Milligan College.  This was a different kind of move in day.  I knew Adam, we had been dating for 4 months at this point, but I did not know anyone else.  Again, I had barely talked to my roommate before moving in, but I had Adam.  The move in experience was different this year because I was coming in as a transfer so I didn’t feel like I fit with everyone else because I wasn’t a freshman.  I still went to all the new student activities, but I didn’t end up becoming friends with that group until much later.  Most of my friends ended up being Adams friends.  It was a really good, but really different experience.  I was still nervous, but even knowing one person was a big help.
move in 2010I don’t have any pictures from move in 2010, but here is one gem I dug up.  My junior year at Milligan was a very interesting year.  I was living in MSA with three other girls.  There were high points and low points, but my Junior year overall was a good year with lots of time with friends and lots of fun memories.
move in 2011In 2011 Adam and I moved in as newlyweds!  It was another new experience with move in day.  It was fun to set up our first apartment together and to decorate and figure out where everything was going to go.  Adam got a little too interested in our immersion blender and we had a trip to the emergency room, but all ended well except that I did a lot of the unpacking myself. Our senior year at Milligan was a great experience.  It was a great last year at Milligan.
move in 2012Move in day 2012 brought another new experience.  We moved across the street into the Emmanuel Village where Adam would be starting seminary.  We had some awesome friends help us move and we were again able to organize and decorate together and create a comfortable home.

Move in day 2013–We get to stay put!  This will be the longest we have lived in one place together.  The Emmanuel Village really feels like our first home because we get to stay for more than a year 🙂  We have already done some moving this year though.  We helped our best friends move and we helped my sister move in.

I hope that all the students have a great move in day today.  It can be a really fun time.  I know that it always was for me!

Transition to Delight

I have been doing a Bible Study recently with some lovely ladies.  The Bible Study is called “Duty or Delight.” It is all about changing our relationship with God from one of duty to delight.  I have found the need for this change most evident in reading my Bible.

For so many years I have felt that reading the Bible was just something that I had to do in order to be a Christian.  In my mind, Christians read their Bible every day.  I would feel like a bad Christian if I did not read my Bible every day, and still do.

This study has shown my that God doesn’t want me to read the Bible (or pray or anything) just because I feel like I have to, but because I want to, because it brings me joy, because I delight in it.  But how do you make that switch?  How do you find delight in reading the Bible when for so long it has been a duty that causes you to feel guilty if you don’t do it.

I am personally struggling to make this transition in my own life.  I’m trying to figure out how to delight in reading the Bible.  Honestly, I am not sure when the last time was that I read the Bible simply because I delight in doing so.  I feel like I have always read the Bible because I had to.  So how do I turn the switch in my mind?

Has anyone else struggled with this?   Do you have any helpful hints?

A Little Note

It’s good that this is such a busy week, well month because it has been so hard for me to stay off of Pinterest.  This busy schedule has almost helped me forget about Pinterest (who am I kidding?)

But it has gotten harder this last week because I am planning a shower with a friend for another good friend and it is so hard to plan a shower without using Pinterest for inspiration!

Only 6 more days.  Be looking for my reflections on my 30 days without Pinterest.

My Morning Routine

My Morning Routine: In Theory and In Reality

In Theory
6:00AM-Wake up wide awake
6:15AM-Start morning walk
6:45AM-End morning walk
7:00AM-Breakfast and Bible Study
7:30AM-Finish getting ready for work, blow dry hair, put make up on, look professional
7:55AM-Arrive at work ready for the day

In Reality
7:00AM-Wake up and slowly make way to the shower
7:30AM-Brush teeth and decide no time for make up or to blow dry hair and throwing on a comfy outfit
7:45AM-Make lunch
7:55AM-Arrive at work

I’m trying to get the reality to look more like the theory because I think that kind of a morning looks great.

It’s that Day

It’s that day!  It’s finally here!
This girl is back!
1 2 3 4 5We didn’t always feel this way about each other, read about that on Amanda’s blog here, but now we are great friends!  And I’m so glad that she is back here at Milligan.  It has been a long summer without her.  And my Dad is here today too!  Yay!  Just wish my mom could’ve made the trip down, but hopefully we’ll see her soon.  I’m looking forward to an evening of hanging out with my family.  And hopefully there will be more of these great days to come (and more awesome pictures too).

A Helpful How-To, from Me to You

How-To Choose a Movie to Watch

This is a process that I go through quite often.  And I thought now would be a good time to share with you.

Instead of staring helplessly at your stack of movies, wondering which one to spend your saturday night watching, now you can face it with a plan.

Step 1-Try to figure out if you are in the mood for a specific genre.  My movies are organized by genre to help you narrow it down.  If I know I’m in the mood for a romantic comedy I don’t have to waste my time going over the action titles, I can jump right to the romantic comedy section of my shelves.  So this is always the first question I ask myself.  If you are not in the mood for a specific genre, which was my problem tonight, then move on the the next step.

Step 2-Identify any movie that you feel like watching and pull them off the shelf.  Maybe longer if I am particularly indecisive.  Tonight I left myself with 10 movies to choose from.
IMG_1987As you can see I had a mix of genres.

Step 3- Quickly eliminate half of the movies.  One way I like to do this step is to try to eliminate multiples of a genre.  As you can see, I have three “chick flicks,” so I narrowed those down to one.  I also have four action films which I also narrowed down to one.  I was left with 5 movies to choose from, all from different genres.
Step 4-Sit there contemplating what you really want to watch and make eliminations from there.
IMG_1989I found myself left with three movies that I could not choose between, so I put them in the order that I wanted to watch them and I will watch as many as I can before I go to bed tonight.
Here is the final order I settled on.  We’ll see how far the order I make it tonight.

This process can sometimes take me 30 minutes, but once I choose a movie I don’t second guess myself.  I have found this to be a good method and I hope you do as well.  Here’s to a great Saturday night movie night!
